If you’re having trouble getting access to public records, the Michigan Coalition for Open Government may be able to provide advice and, in limited cases, access to financial support for open government lawsuits.
Our coalition is a volunteer-led organization. We do not employ lawyers, although we do work closely with law students in the First Amendment Clinic at the Michigan State University College of Law to evaluate the legal merits of cases.
As the Michigan affiliate of the National Freedom of Information Coalition, our organization can apply for access to the Knight FOI Fund. This national fund exists to offer financial support in open government lawsuits. It was established to fuel and assist the pursuit of important FOI cases by helping to defray upfront costs such as filing fees, depositions, court costs and other expenses associated with legal actions. Only in rare circumstances do Knight FOI Fund grant awards also include direct outlays for attorney fees.
